Global reach: recruitment abroad
Oct. 27, 2011
In a time of diminishing state funds and higher tuition costs, UCLA is expanding its recruitment of out-of-state and international students, a strategy that helps the university's financial circumstances and improves the its competitiveness on a global scale. While nonresident applications already consistently grow from year to year, the past year marks the first university effort to actively seek out these students.
Over the past several years, the international applicant pool has expanded significantly, doubling from about 2,800 to 5,700 over the last four years. Countries such as China and South Korea have exploded, together representing more than 60 percent of last year's applicants. Looking at data provided by UCLA Undergraduate Admissions and Relations with Schools, the Daily Bruin mapped out the changes in the applicant pool from fall 2008 to 2011. The size of the circles, as well as the color changes, represent an increase or decrease in applicants from the year before. Click on the years below to explore.
